NIGHT TIDE (1961)
Wednesday, June 27th, 2012A youthful Curtis Harrington directs an equally short-toothed, cherubic Dennis Hooper in this atmospheric mermaid yarn. Sailor boy Hooper meets this pretty aquatic bird by the sea shore (LINDA LAWSON), who seems up for it; he falls in love with the watery bint; but is she real or fantasy? (Scorpions reference is, of course, completely intentional, and is not featured in said production!)
UNA DONNA CHIAMATA APACHE (1976)
Saturday, June 23rd, 2012DOMINIQUE IS DEAD (1978)
Saturday, June 23rd, 2012Creaky British Gothic melodrama from 1978 with a quality cast that, frankly, outshines the rather lacklustre material; that said, I am a total geek for atmospheric, haunted house spookshows, and ‘Dominique’ proved to be wholly entertaining; even though the plot is derivative and the twists might not be as entirely unpredictable as the writer might’ve hoped! The fault is in the hackneyed, uninspired writing, as the direction really is first rate, and the moody lighting is quite exceptional, reminding one of Argento’s bar-raising ‘Suspiria’. For those more unforgiving souls seeking some late night horror hokum, you certainly could do far worse than ‘Dominique’.
